's kurt gregory has more. >> reporter: released in the small community of midland city, alabama, following the dramatic rescue of a 5-year-old held captive for seven days in an underground bunker. wait that a tightly knit community had been anxious to hear. >> at approximately 3:12 this afternoon, fbi agents safely recovered the child who's been held hostage for nearly a week. >> reporter: police say the boy has been held captive by 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes after dykes boarded a school bus last week, shot and killed the bus driver. fbi said negotiations with dykes deteriorated within the last 24 hours and that dykes was observed holding a gun. >> at this point, fbi agents fearing the child was in imminent danger, entered the bunker and rescued the child. >> reporter: nbc news has learned a diversionary device was used and that the hostage rescue team entered in a door at the top of the bunker. >> by grace of god, he's okay. that was the mission of every man and woman on this compound. >> reporter: the horrific ordeal now over for the 5-year-old. his parents and his community. kurt grego

in the city of carona this morning. the officers were on special assignment to provide security for police officials who were mentioned in dorner's manifesto. the officers were following dorner in their patrol car when they say he got out of his pickup truck and opened fir with a rifle. >> this is a vendetta against all of southern california law enforcement. >> reporter: in the city of torrence police who were protecting a person named in his manifesto mistakenly shot and wounded several people who were in a pickup truck officers believed was dorner's. dorner is also suspected of shooting and killing a college basketball coach and her fiance in a parki garage on sunday night. his badge and id were found near the airport in san diego this morning. edward lawrence for cbs news, riverside, california. >> he released an online grievance against the l.a. police department. he said he was fired his reputation ruined for reporting an incident of police brutality. he said, "i have exhausted all available means of obtaining my name back. this is my last resor

people died. that is more than 50% of the entire total population who died in new york city during hurricane sandy in october. this borough was devastated. staten island is used to being ignored because it's the smallest borough and it is not being ignored anymore. they're doing a great job of clearing this street so looks like they've had about 8 to 10 inches. the winds haven't been that heavy compared to connecticut, massachusetts and rhode island and a lot of people here who were anxious before this are breathing a sigh of relief. right here you can see there were many houses in this block that were destroyed. this was a house when hurricane sandy came through and no longer is. it is rubble. the house right next door was heavily damaged and people have been busily repairing it hoping to move in this week. it looks like they won't be able because they were afraid of the blizzard and hope to move in monday they were telling us. they've had a lot of tough times lately. they're very grateful at this point it doesn't appear the storm is as serious in this particular area as they thou

-breaking storm for them. new york city's probably going to be in the 12 to 18-inch range. here in boston, we are under blizzard warnings now. blizzard conditions expected with the prolonged time of wind and heavy snow. the snow is really picking up in boston right now. the radar showing it's all snow. temperatures there below freezing and the timing is such that the snow will continue to pick up over the next few hours. by nightfall, probably two to four inches of snow. blizzard conditions this evening. probably 25 to 40 hello mile-her hof sustained winds and through the night and even rising to 35 to 60-mile-per-hour range. 12 to 18 inches more falling and then tomorrow morning beginning to see it taper off and additional five inches could fall and blizzard conditions for a while longer, perhaps even after the snow tapers off and visibility will be very low. we'll continue to watch all of new england, as well as new york city, which is under that blizzard threat, as well. you're under a blizzard warning from new york northward and out toward long island and seeing the possibility of gusty w

is the rain. new york city, a mixture of snow and rain. long island, now over to mostly rain. coastal areas of southern new england, it's going to be a battle. that's why your snow totals will be a lot less. the full-blown snowstorm begins from boston to the hartford area and definitely around prove d providence. that's when the storm will be the strongest. that's when we'll have the blizzard conditions, high tide cycle. very dangerous at 10:00 a.m. near boston. that's when the highest winds will be felt. storm surge of two to four feet. if we're going to see houses damaged and falling into the water, we go early throughout tomorrow morning. again, the snowfall totals, they look pretty certain. one to two feet, a wide section of maine, southern new hampshire, massachusetts, connecticut, rhode island with a possibility of a bulls eye of 24 to possibly 30 inches of snow. that's where it's historic. still, widespread all the way from buffalo down to philadelphia and new york city by the time we're all done. as far as the boston area goes, that's where we expect the worst to develop during the

notice new york city and jersey didn't have a lot of snow over the next couple of hours. now it's starting to fill in a little bit. it's a little too late. this storm is moving very quickly. look at it on satellite imagery. you can see it just to the south. it's even past cape cod now. for new york city, you have two to four inches on the ground. you'll get another two to three by the time it's all said and done. new york city it's a tough forecast from the start. if there's one city that would be considered a bust, maybe that would be it. heaviest snow shifts, rhode island, massachusetts, new hampshire, coastal maine. we'll be ending the snow in the overnight hours. adirondacks, catskills, poconos and new jersey. we'll have blowing snow out there. heavy accumulating snows will be ending during the overnight hours. if anything, the storm is moving a little faster than expected. a lot of us will actually wake up with no snow falling from the sky saturday morning. the storm total forecast, new york city at 6 to 10, down to 4 to 8. we have a shot of getting 18 or so around hartford
